Word 2004 Unexpected shutdown and other problems

K

kopite

We are running Word 2004 with SP1 and all other Office updates have
been installed. Mac OS X 10.3.6 or 10.3.7 is used.

When starting Word we get an error message 'Unexpected shutdown'. Do
you want to send this information... If we choose to send the
information, the program seems to work fine... until the next time the
computer is restarted. We have this problem on many of the computers
with Word 2004 installed so it is causing lots of problems. We have
tried to uninstall and reinstall Office 2004 but that does not solve
the problem. Any ideas how to solve it?

We also have a problem when you mark a row and choose bold, underline
etc as all the text in the entire document change! This problem only
occur on some of the computers. Very annoying! What to do?

Cheers!

Does this only happen after the first restart of the computer, or every time
you start up Word?

You seem to be saying the program doesn't work fine if you choose NOT to
send the information? (Which I assume is the MS error reporting dialog?) Is
that right? (that doesn't make any sense)

When you tried to uninstall, did you run the Remove Office tool?

There are standard troubleshooting techniques here:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

If Word gets to the splash screen and then quits, that might be a corrupt
font.

Was Office 2004 installed individually on each computer?

Hitting Undo directly after the wholesale reformat will fix the problem
temporarily.

You have "automatically update" checked for the Normal Style. Go to Format
| Style, make sure Normal is selected in the left column, click Modify,
uncheck the "automatically update" box (which tells Word to redefine the
Normal style anytime you make a manual change. Check "add to template" to
make sure it holds for new documents. You will have to repeat in old
documents, it isn't retroactive.

Seems to be first restart of the computer, not sure that goes for all
computers here though.

Could well be the same when pressing not to send, but after pressing it
and the program restarts it seems to work better (until restart)
When you tried to uninstall, did you run the Remove Office tool?

No, couldn´t find one. Removed program and preferences files.

Hello "kopite",

Would it be possible for you to send me directly the Crash Log from the
Restart Crash? On the "Microsoft Error Reporting" dialog, click "More
Information..." and copy and paste all the text into an email.

You can send it directly to me at (e-mail address removed).

I "might" be able to tell you what is going on, and how to fix it.

Hey Bjorn,

Thanks for sending this. Unfortunately it didn't reveal the answers I hoped
it would.

The very first thing I would suggest would be to do a complete Uninstall and
Reinstall using the "Remove Office" Tool. Since on the Newsgroup you said
you removed Office manually.

You can find this in the "Microsoft Office 2004" under "Additional
Tools:Remove Office" (if it's not there, it would surely be on the original
CD in the same location.)

If that that doesn't work, post back, and we'll continue from there.

I have used Remove Office Tool and reinstalled Office on a couple of
computers but the problem remain.
