Word 2004 will not start, crashes upon starting

While working on a document in Word 2004, it crashed. The error
report utility popped up and asked if I would like to report the error
and then try to recover my document. I said yes. The error message
was sent and Word tried to restart.

Word 2004 is now crashing instantly every time I try to open it. It
will not fully start up. It crashes. The error report utility sends
the error message and tries to restart Word. It crashes again and the
cycle is repeated indefinitely.

Has anyone else seen this?

I've attached the error log. I don't know how to read it but maybe
someone out there can help me interpret it.

Check duplicate fonts with the help of Font Book. Erase and then re-install
the whole Office 2004 suite. Set up a new user account and check whether
this problem persists under this new account.

I had the same issue and this really improved the situation.

There are many easier things that one can try first--check add-ins, check
prefs, check Normal, for example.

For add-ins, see if there is anything in the Apps/Office/Office/Word/Startup
folder. If so, remove and see if problem is fixed.

JerMac, I don't think you saw Beth Rosengard's last piece of advice, to
check Normal and preferences. Shamelessly plagarizing, as the same applies
to Steve:

1) Quit Word and navigate to your Normal template which should be in
~/Microsoft User Data/Normal. Rename Normal to something else (like
OldNormal), then relaunch Word. If this fixes the problem but you have
customizations, etc, in OldNormal that you want to maintain, you can use
Organizer to transfer those from OldNormal to the newly-created Normal
template. Then you can trash the old renamed file. To learn how to use
Organizer, see here (if you're using Safari you may have to refresh the page
a couple times):

If this doesn't fix the problem, quit Word again, trash the new Normal and
rename OldNormal back to Normal.

2) To test your Preference files, quit *all* Office Applications.
Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/. Drag to the desktop the
following files: com.microsoft.Word.prefs.plist,
com.microsoft.Office.prefs.plist and Microsoft Component Preferences. When
you restart Word, these files will be recreated. If all is well, you can
trash the old files. You will have to reset some Preferences and
AutoCorrect settings.

If this doesn't help, you can trash the new files and rename the old ones
back.

I believe a new user account would reset Normal and preferences as well, so
your problem probably was in those.

By the way, generally the error log is not particularly useful on this ng.

While working on a document in Word 2004, it crashed. The error
report utility popped up and asked if I would like to report the error
and then try to recover my document. I said yes. The error message
was sent and Word tried to restart.

Word 2004 is now crashing instantly every time I try to open it. It
will not fully start up. It crashes. The error report utility sends
the error message and tries to restart Word. It crashes again and the
cycle is repeated indefinitely.

Has anyone else seen this?

I've attached the error log. I don't know how to read it but maybe
someone out there can help me interpret it.

I had a similar problem with Office 2004. Word would crash after a while,
whether it had a document open or not. I tried cleaning up fonts and
trashing preferences to no avail. After I while I noticed that on quitting
word, I saw a dialogue box 'saving normal' that remained for some time,
after which I got the spinning ball of crash.

I have just found and deleted the Normal template and so far this SEEMS to
have done the trick.
