Word 2004 won't save to server

About 10 times over the last two days, Word has refused to save changes to a document I opened from our server. Instead I get the message, "There has been a network or file permission error. The network connection may be lost." I haven't had this problem from other applications, such as excel or Photoshop. The workaround is to save the document to my desktop, copy it to the server, and delete from my desktop. I would rather be able to simply save, as this process is cumbersome. Any suggestions?
