Word 2007 Addins/Templates

K

kb

Hi,

I managed to get my Word into a state where a custom template I loaded
programmatically before is permanently loaded on start-up now. I have
unloaded all code that loads the template, but the template is still
loading... and in fact crashes Word each time I exit Word. If I manually
unload the template, it also crashes Word.

I got into this state by having Word 2007 open with unsaved data when
Windows Vista's Automatic Updates ran overnight. When the updates were
installed and the machine rebooted, my Word appeared corrupt.

My question is, where does Word 2007 store the list of templates/add-ins it
loads? I've scoured the registry and the hard drive for this list, but can't
seem to find a reference to my template.

Also note that the template does not load with the /a switch, as expected.

Any help will be welcome. Thanks

Office button menu, Word Options, Advanced, scroll down until you find
File Locations. Word stores the files in the STARTUP folder listed
there.

Hi, Patrick. Thanks for helping out. However, I checked the Startup file
location and there are no templates found there. Where else can Word be
storing this information?

You might have modified Normal.dotm?
Find that file and rename it to something else then open Word again.
It'll recreate the file from scratch.

Hi Patrick,

I deleted the normal.dotm, but that didn't work.

FYI, I called Microsoft support, who did eventually help me find where the
info is stored. It turns out the path to the template is stored in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data, in the "Settings"
value. Deleting/renaming this key makes Word recreate it.

The crash went away when I removed the corrupt data.
