Word 2007 and my macros?

E

Ed from AZ

We just got the word - we will be "upgrading" to Office 2007 shortly.

I _live_ by my macros! If they worked fine in Word 2000 and 2003,
will they still work in 2007?

I figure I need to make a backup of my Normal and templates. I know
the toolbars won't show up in 2007, and any macros that show or hide
toolbars on open or close won't work. If I clean these macros out of
my files, should everything else be mostly okay?

Most of them should work, the notable exception being those that employ
autotext, which will have to be modified.

The *custom* toolbars will show up in Word 2007 and you can show and hide
those toolbars, though frankly there isn't a lot of point - see

Hi, Graham. Thanks for responding.

I don't use AutoText, either in my normal work or in macros. So I'm
safe there.

Somehow I got the idea that additional toolbars I have created to hold
custom buttons for my macros would not appear?? I thought only the
ribbon was visible. Then again, I have never seen the ribbon except
in screen shots. A friend has 2007 at home and predicts a wave of
poor productivity and an overwhelmed Help Desk!

I am thinking about Pat's add-in, as there is no way I could get them
to install 2003 alongside 2007.

I am sorry for you for having to deal with Word 2007. Although
customizing the ribbon is a nice approach, consider Classic Menu:

http://www.addintools.com/english/menuoffice/?gclid=CNv1oc-mppMCFRaHMAoddmVWnQ

It won't bring you back to Word 2003, but at least, it will help you
deal with the mess MS has made of an already complex piece of Software.

I consider Word 2007 is to Word 97 what Vista is to XP.

Yourt friend is right - the learning curve is steep. Businesses that throw
2007 into the mix without providing the extra training resources are going
to suffer the consequences.

You missed the point. There is no need to install Word 2003 alongside 2007
to use custom toolbars that are already contained in 2003 document templates
(Keeping a copy of 2003 for support would not be a bad plan however). They
will appear on the add-ins tab. the Ribbon Editor is a fine tool, but
doesn't get over the fact that Word 2007 and 2003 are not the same.

Is that true?

I know, of course, that you can use Building blocks instead but I thought
old code would still run correctly.

None of my macros that used Autotext ran in Word 2007 eg in Word 2003
NormalTemplate.AutoTextEntries("AutoTextName").etc

Word 2007 required
NormalTemplate.BuildingBlockEntries("AutoTextName").etc

I suspect the problem was something to do with the installation of 2007
which when converting the entries may not have categorized the entries in
the autotext gallery so the macro could not find them. I have retested and
either will work as long as the entries are listed in the correct gallery.

Unfortunately I can not easily go back to the original install condition to
re-live exactly what the installation does with the autotexts from
normal.dot. Suffice to say that I had to rework the macros that used
autotext at the time, which irked somewhat :(.

Shall we say that it *should* work? The learning curve for 2007 is steep
enough, without this sort of detail ;)

So if I have a 203 template called MyMacros.dot, and make sure the
custom toolbars I use are attached to that template, then I can make
this template an add-in in 2007 and the toolbars _should_ (fingers
crossed!) be available in the Ribbon?

Well, that's better than nothing. I'm glad the 2007 team at least
threw us a bone. I'm a fairly light-weight "power user", but what I
have I use constantly. I can only imagine what some have had to go
through.

Essentially yes - To ensure that the toolbar appears make sure that it is
displayed and preferably 'floating' over the template document space before
saving the template you intend to use in this manner.

I use AutoText extensively, and my templates do work in Word 2007. It is
just that AutoText isn't so very visible from the user interface.
