word 2007 app crash

T

tod

This below failure report occurs when I close word 2007 std edition without
first closing the word doc or docx that is open. It occurs whether Word 2007
is setup to compatability mode or not. It occurs whether word is set to save
in .docx or save in .doc Not all old documents cause the event. I have
been unable to find a pattern of types of existing files that cause the event
but a high high majority of files cause it and this includes files I
regularly use from the last one to five years from various versions of word
and from various operating systems of XP and vista.

details: two versions of the crash report are copied below to you as one
version casues word to reopen and one version casues word to close.

problem sequence. one or more doc or docx are open in word. I ask the docs
to close individually. all will close with no messages or alarms until last
doc is closed. the last one is requested to close by using the word main
window X. at that time the word main page closes from desktop, then
"microsoft windows" message appears that says MS Office Word has stopped
working. "Windows can check online for a solution to the problem and try to
recover your infomration and restart." problem details are what are copied
below. APPCRASH is listed as problem event name for the restarts and offcie
12 crash is listed for the word must close event.

After my input of either choice "restart program" or Check online for a
solution and restart program", the command is accepted and crash message
window closes then a message appears that says word cannot open the file ~
WRS{97c34DCD-A350-4083-A740-2BDE4F438CA0}.tmp same message goes on to say "if
file is stored on computer there may be a problem with hardware. try saving
the file in another location and opening it there." file name seems to
change also as here's another file listed on another crash I just did
~WRS(10563FCB-90CD-4618-819A-0510E899F9B7}.tmp

the input request is "ok?" only.

upon hitting ok, all messages disappear, new message appears that says word
is trying to save my infomormation and check for solution. after a few
seconds this closes and new message says word is restarting for one type of
crash. word restarts with blank doc 1 and event is finished.
The second event says word is closing upon searching for "online solution"
and that is what happens.

finally note that closing any number of documents that are open in either
..doc or .docx and then closing word with separate command will not ever cause
a crash.

I apologize for entering this issue on someone elses thread.

It's the HP Printer driver. Please go to the HP support site and report this
error. Demand a fix for this bug. It has been bugging Word 2007 users for
over a year and still HP has not fixed the error.

After some time with HP technical chat today, we simply set the HP printers
in my laptop to not be the "default" printer by setting up a fake non-HP
printer as default. Key being fake printer. No more crashes so far in word
and printing on normal printer HP 7960 and Laser jet 4000 works normally
through using the pull down printer menues. Hp said they will not be
updating the HP drivers to resolve this issue. They did not give reason why.

footnote: I ahve now set default to the office image writer printer and
still no problems have reoccurred.
regards for the help!

They are pathetic! This is the first time I've heard them as having said
they won't be updating the driver.

So the solution presented of not setting the HP printer as the default but
to use another driver - only selecting the HP when you need to print to it
is the work around. If you do this for a long complex document, after
switching to the offending driver, check the document layout hasn't changed
too much before printing though as Word relies on printer drivers for laying
out documents and every printer driver gives slightly different results.

I have been having the same problem the last couple of days ever since I
installed a new Photosmart C4380 printer. I was at a loss for what to do
until I stumbled on this discussion. I sent an email support request to HP
insisting that they issue a patch; we will see.

Thanks!

I was having the same problem, but for me the problem resolved itself
simply by turning my printer off when I want to close a document.

I just did the "quick fix" by changing my default printer to Microsoft
Imaging and that seems to work. But I got a helpful response from HP also.

Here is what they offered:

We have a known compatibility issue with Microsoft word 2007. We are working
on it and soon will be releasing a solution for it. However, I appreciate
your efforts in trying to resolve this issue. I regret for the inconvenience
caused.
However, as a work around please perform the following steps:
Work around 1: Please select any other printer (if any) as default printer
in Printers and faxes folder. (Please perform the following steps)
1. Click on Start and open Control Panel.
2. Open Printers and Faxes.
3. Right click on any printer icon other than HP Photosmart C4380 all in
one and select as ' Set this printer as Default printer'.
Now verify the result.
If you does not have any other printer icon in Printers and Faxes folder,
please perform Work around 2.
Work around 2:
1. Click Start and open Printers and Faxes.
2. On the left side of the page near the top, click Add a printer.
3. In the Add printer box, double-click Add a local printer.
4. Click Use an existing port, and then click Next.
5. Under Manufacturer, click the manufacturer of your printer, for example,
HP, and then under Printers, click the different printer that your
manufacturer recommended, for example HP DeskJet 550c.
6. If you see "Which version of the driver do you want to use?†click Use
the driver that is currently installed (recommended), and then click Next.
7. Click to select the Set as the default printer check box, click Next, and
then click Finish.
8. In the Printers and Faxes folder, double-click the new printer.
9. On the Printer menu, click Properties.
10. On the Ports tab, click to select the appropriate port check box for
your printer, and then click OK. For example, you can select LPT1 if your
printer is connected to your computer (LTP1 is a port that is used by most
computers to communicate with a local printer).

Hi,

I think you can try a utility called Advanced Word Repair to repair
your Word document. It works rather well for my corrupt Word
documents. Its web address is http://www.datanumen.com/awr/

Alan

R

Rev. Michael L. Burns

I have a similar problem and also use an HP Printer (an all-in-one unit).
However, I had no problems what-so-ever with Word 2007 and the printer until
after upgrading my systems from XP Professional to Vista Ultimate. Now I can
close open, edit, save and close any document created prior to the upgrade
ok, but if I try to close Word I get the error described.

Interestingly if I create a new document, enter some text, save it, close it
and then close Word, it closes Word without the error. Launching Word and
reopening the newly created document and making changes, closing it and
closing Word causes no problems. However, if I move that same file to
another computer and edit it and save/close and then exit Word it gives the
error again.

All three systems use the same printer as default, one directly connected
and the other two through the network just as they were under XP. Like I
said earlier, I had not problems at all with Word 2007 and the HP printer
until I upgraded to Vista.

I worked with HP on the same compatability issues with Office 2007 running in
Vista. For me, when I close Word, Excel or Powerpoint, I get the same error,
"application stopped responding...". the program closes and reopens in an
endless loop unless I change to a different default printer other than my HP
7100 All-in-One printer. HP told me they are work on the problem with
Microsoft and would be notifying customers when the problem is corrected. I
am now holding my breath...

My advice is to start breathing again as soon as possible... unless I am too
late!
