According to the MS Office 2007 Resource Kit documentation, in Word 2007, if
you set the default file format to the 97-2003 formats, then every time you
start a new document, [Compatibility Mode] should kick-in immediately. At
the moment, Compatibility Mode does not kick-in for a new document until you
save it to the 97-2003 formats.
I have Office 2007 installed on my home computer directly from the Office
2007 installation media, and I've verified that Word 2007 has the same
behavior, so it's definitely not a problem with our Office 2007 installation
package at my company.
A suggestion was made in another newsgroup: To go to Word Options /
Advanced / Compatibility options for: All New Documents. Then make sure "Lay
out this document as if created in:" is equal to "Microsoft Office Word
2003". I've tried to set that about 10 different ways, but I can't get the
setting to "stick"... it keeps reverting back to "Microsoft Office Word 2007"
for "All New Documents".
