Word 2007 Cannot save file: "A file error has occurred"

When I try to save a file I get a small "Microsoft Office Word" messagebox
reading:
A file error has occurred.
C:\Users\...\On the Web in an Hour.docx)

Document is 30 pages long.
Eventually it will be about 200 pages long.
Each chapter is created from existing HTML files. These files use only
standard HTML styles. No hardcoded formatting.
Completely formatted using style sheet.
Average of 1.1 pictures per page.
Has a couple of macros to shorten conversion of certain HTML styles to Word
styles.

This is disturbing because I am creating it under deadline and it's an
important file.

My only workaround is:
* Save as Word 2003 format on a different drive (I am using a flash drive).
* Reboot machine
* Later, do a Convert to restore

Problem with this approach is that it conflicts with the need to save files
frequently so as not to lose too much work in case of Word crashing.

Rig:
Vista Ultimate 64 bit SP1
Intel Core i7@ 920 2.67Ghx
12G RAM, 1T hard disk with 900G available
Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Keyboard 8000

Never use Word with any type of removable media. ALWAYS work with your local
HDD. Copy to and from the removable media.

Terry, sorry for not explaining it properly, and thanks for the reply.

The error I'm reporting is that I *cannot* save it to my hard disk (drive C
in the error message). As a consequence I am forced to save it to the flash
drive, and in Word 2003 format to boot. The flash drive is merely to keep me
from losing my work entirely.

Understood now. If you cannot save to your HDD, it suggests a security issue
or most likely, your AV stopping. Do you have Norton AV or Kaspersky? Both
have problems with the Office Plugin option that can be safely disabled to
resolve such issues.
