Word 2007: Can't display some panes (e.g. Styles & Formatting)

I can't diplay some panes unless I run Word in Safe mode.
I am running Windows XP Pro.
I have created a new Data folder in:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data
and this did not solve the problem. Is it possible I have a corrupt Registry
Key?
If so, how do I correct this problem?
I did a compete reinstall of my OS and this solved the problem until I
changed a Word Option setting: In Advanced > Display > Style area pane width,
I increased the value from zero to 3.5 cm. After I did this, I lost the
functionality to display the Styles & Formatting and File Properties panes
(these are those that I'm aware of).
Suggestions???

If deleting the Data key doesn't help, you could try deleting the whole Word
key in the registry (with Word closed of course).

Did you also look into the other possibilities (macros in normal.dotm or in
an add-in) when Word runs in Safe mode but not in "ordinary" mode?
