Word 2007 changes formatting

Since we upgraded to Word 2007, the program changes the outline levels in my
documents regardless of how I have set the styles or attached the themes.
This is very annoying in that I have to reformat the document every time I
open it. I have unchecked the "Update style" box on all of my styles and in
the Word Options section. Re-attaching a template or theme that was
previously corrected has no effect. If I save the document, Word asks if I
want to save the style changes (yes I do!). But the next time the document
is opened, I have to perform the exact same reformat. Compatibility mode
does not seem to have any effect either. This is a very frustrating
"feature" in the new version of Word and is costing me time and our clients
money.

In the Templates and Add-Ins dialog box, make sure that the "Automatically
update document styles" option is cleared. Does that make a difference?

Actually, no. I believe that the file I am working with is corrupted
somehow. I have saved the file in almost every conceivable format that
preserves document formatting. The error still appears. I even opened it in
an older version of Word (2003 for Mac) and the error was still there! I
saved the "repaired" document using Word for Mac and emailed it back to the
office. I don't know if saving the file that way fixed the problem yet. I
just got back to the office after time in the field.
