Word 2007 Combine Documents label unmarked changes

Hello - I have a general question about the "Combine Documents" dialog box
when using the Compare / Combine option under the Review tab. I can't find a
help topic that gives a desciption of what "Label unmarked changes with"
means. Can someone tell me the purpose of this option? How can there be
"unmarked" changes in a document? This probably seem like the most obvious
thing, and I think I'm close to "getting" it, but the lightbulb is just not
going off.

I miss the days of hitting the little question mark in dialog boxes and
being able to click almost any option in the dialog box for a brief
description of that option. Would love to see that come back!

This is just a guess, mind you, but since it suggests a Reviewer name, I think
an "unmarked change" is one that didn't exist before the comparison occurs.
(One or both documents may contain revisions already.) Doing the comparison
("combining") will create new Revisions. Revisions need to be labelled with who
made the change. The dialog box lets you set two different "reviewers" as
originating the changes so that you can identify from which document the change
is coming.

confused on this one and will keep looking into it, but your answer gives me

I found this sentence in "The Microsoft Office Word Teams' blog":

" The 'Label changes with' box enables you to change the name that will be
attributed to the revisions (imagine that your assistant is the one working
with the document but you want the changes attributed to you)..."

I thought that made sense, and I found my answer, however, this sentence
refers to the "Compare" dialog box - which does say "Label changes with".

When you use the "Combine" feature, the Combine Documents dialog box option
says "Label unmarked changes with:" - so this is where the mystery remains
for me. What are "unmarked" changes? Are these changes made to the original
document AFTER it was sent to others, and "track changes" was not turned on,
so there is no one associated with the changed original?

Other explanations I've found on the Internet all point to the "Compare"
dialog box, not the "Combine Documents" dialog box.

I'm really sorry if I'm just being dumb on this one. I'm putting together a
training session on tracking changes and this option is just clear as mud for
me. Anyone? Clarification? Thank you!

Hi Tammy,

Yes. The combine document choice 'unmarked' changes choice allows you to include a document that did not have any unprocessed
tracked changes, or compare a before/after choice of 2 documents you may be working on.

The 'unmarked changes let you 'name an author' for the differences, although you use a label such as 'Revision 1'.

The default suggestion is the name of the author stored in the document properties (if any) else the current information in the Word
Options for user name.

Where/if the author names appear varies based on your choice to combine to new document or combine into one of the source documents.
