Word 2007 - contacting the server for information. Press ESC to cancel

Win XP SPII, when scrolling through a large document, Word 2007 is
constantly displaying this message -

'contacting the server for information. Press ESC to cancel' and
becomes inoperative for about 30 seconds.

Another author believes this to be 'Word 2007 Clipboard slowdown' -
see here: http://www.itwriting.com/blog/?p=96 but as I am doing no
copying or pasting - merely scrolling - this does not solve the issue.

Thanks for any ideas.

First, make sure the network printer is available to your computer. You
could try to print a test page. If that is OK:

For diagnostic purposes:

If you have a printer attached to the computer that you are using,
select the driver for that printer as default rather than a networked
printer and try again.

If you do not have a local printer, install the printer driver for the
printer you use on the network and select connect to File as the
connection. Select that as the default printer.

Try again.

Let us know.

Note:
When and if you actually print, a dialogue will come up. Follow the
on-screen prompts.

I am not sure if your reply is addressed to me- but this has nothing
to do with printers - this behavior of 'clipboard slowdown/lockup' is
caused merely scrolling through a document. I am thinking this has to
do with the disabling of a service - maybe - just a guess COM+ System
Application.

Thanks for the effort.

When Word does the calculations necessary to do the document layout, it
refers to the printer driver to get necessary information about, among
other things, unprintable regions at the top/bottom and left/right of
the document. Thus, if the printer driver is not available to Word,
delays are experienced as one scrolls through the document and Word
rasterise each page.

And yes, there are other causes for such problems but I thought this one
was worth checking. I should have deleted the references to actual
printing from my template text since I wrote it for another situation
and adapted for this one-insufficiently, as it turned out.

I agree with Tom. Word queries your printer driver for numerous activities -
not just when you print or preview a file. The reason for this is so Word
can display the document as it will look when it's printed.

If you are using a network printer then it could be the printer driver is
also on the network and the delay you are encountering is due to Word is
searching for it. Try removing your printer and then add it back using the
Add Printer Wizard which will install the printer driver locally.

Note that others have reported similar issues, the same message and delay,
and the local printer driver resolved problem so this possibility does need
to be ruled out.

Here is what you need to do.....

1. Click on Office button and click "Word Options"
2. Select "Add-Ins" tab and at the botton change the list to "Templates" and press "Go"
3. Here we go...."Document Template" will be attached to some template in a remote server.....Just uncheck "Automatically update document styles".

Hi

Sorry for resurecting an old post here but I am having a similar problem.

Layout:

User has laptop with network printer added.
Server has printer installed on it.

Problem:

When a user moves to another office and tries to open a local word docment they recieve the same message and the document is slow to load.

I have tried your above solution and it has not resolved it for me.

Has anyone else had this problem?
