Word 2007 corrups when it auto saved a word doc

My computer locked up when I had a new document opened (document 1) with data
in it and had not yet saved it. I did a hard boot. When I reopened Word, that
doc was auto saved. Now when I open a file in Word, it only opens Word w/out
a file. I have to then open the file and I cannot navigate using the mouse.
(no highlighting or using scrollbar). When I close Word, I get the info box
"Microsoft Word has stopped working. Then it tries to fix the problem and
opens a new blank document. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Word. It still
does not work. I removed the auto saved file. Can anybody please help?

MS Office is crap.

I've used it for years because it was familiar, but after losing a significant part of a book I've been editing I switched to Open Office. No problems after that. Go to http://www.openoffice.org/ And Open Office is FREE.

There may be more than one problem here but it suggests the main problem may
be that the Word DataKey has corrupted. From Start, Run, type in...

regedit

and press enter. Navigate to the Word DataKey and delete it. Make sure you
are definitely deleting the correct key.

Word DataKey

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data

If that doesn't fix it, come back for some further advice.

Jeff,

How does OpenOffice handle RTF files? I have to email that format
many times and sometimes WORD is a problem.
