Word 2007 crashes on "OPEN" for file retreival

When I open Word 2007 I get the normal blank page, however, when I try to use
"OPEN" to retrieve a file, the program crashes (or closes) and I have to
restart it again. I have tried to use file location in the options but it
still closes immediately. I have deleted all my normal.dot files and
reinstalled all the print drivers. Still happens.

Same answer. Open Windows Explorer and check for drive mapping that are no
longer valid and delete them.

Wasn't sure what you mean by "same answer". I did see that the "backup" in
word is pointed to a folder that is no longer on the drive so I added it. I
also checked to make sure all the drives were there. Still no luck. It has
to be with my configurations because my wife, who also has a log on in XP
with admin rights, works fine. The only exception is the Error and Restart
message when you close Word. When I loaded Word in safe mode, it still
crashed when trying to use "open" command. I reinstalled Office 2000 Pro and
it works fine. Of course I uninstalled 2007. Can I run both of them on the
same machine?

Do you see this opening either Doc or DocX file extensions? I ask, as I have
recently started experiencing the same thing you are seeing when I try to
open Doc files. I attributed it to Office SP1, but I started getting a
missing font error, and could not load Word or Excel. I tried repairing to no
avail, so I uninstalled Office completely, and reinstalled.
All was nice for a week or so, but I noticed today that I am experiencing
Word crashes again when I try to open employee review docs with the Doc file
extension.

I saw it open DOC files because I do not use docx. Excel seemed find, it was
just word 2007. I did the same as you...uninstall, reinstall, update to SP1
