I get a message on open Microsoft Office Word has stopped working. If I hold
down the control button there is no problem. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled word to no avail. Sometimes restarting the computer helps but
eventually it returns. Please can you help.

Many thanks.

Using Vista and Word 2007.

It also does not crash in winword.exe /a. I have deleted the data folder in
regedit and have deleted normal.dotm but still it crashes.

i am too having this problem. when opening word 07, it brings up the Word
2007 splash logo but seems to get stuck here and contiunuously loads until i
have to stop it. i tried creating another account and this allowed me to load
up word but it would then become stuck and display a message on the bottom
toolbar saying "running virus scan".
opening with winword.exe /a seems to work.

when i originally got office, word worked fine (this was in March) it is
only recently that this problem has occured

any help would be great

If you are using Symantec/Norton AntiVirus, try disabling the Office
Plugin that comes with it (but don't disable Norton AutoProtect). See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office programs
with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for more information.

Thanks for this. Assuming this is the problem how do I replace my user with a
'clean' version while retaining my emails and other outlook stuff and my
documents? I don't mind having to redo my settings but I can't face losing
real data.

For that you're going to need help from someone more knowledgeable than I,
and I would suggest a Windows NG as the place to start.

Same problem here, and only in the last several months. Get the splash, and
it hangs up until I end the process thru Task Manager. Unfortunately working
with Vista too. Where should we go?

I started seeing this issue a couple of days ago. I'm running Vista Business
and Office 2007. Other Office applications (i.e. Excel) start and run fine,
but not Word. I have uninstalled, with no luck. It did detect that it
needed to run in Safe mode after the reinstall, but this did not fix the
problem.

Ok, problem fixed.

The issue, which was in one of the reference links was that the Word/Vista
combination did not like the network printer that was installed from the
server. I had installed the printer on Tuesday night (Dell3110n) and the
problem started on Wednesday when I went about my day.

What's odd is that the previous network printer, was shared from an XP
machine and didn't cause any problems.

The remedy was to install the printer locally. I'd like to know the
difference observed by Word on the network printer drivers vs the local
printer drivers.

Well Word must be able to see and interrogate its printer driver (the one
active when Word is open, so normally the Windows Default printer). This
needs to be a locally installed printer driver. It cannot interrogate a
driver that isn't installed.

Terry,

When you installed a shared printer from another PC/Server you are given
notice that drivers need to be installed on your local machine. I'm trying
to understand what is different about the drivers installed from the shared
device vs. the ones you install locally.

Here's another twist on this issue. I have a client with SBS2003 and a
Ricoh multifunction unit that is installed on the server. The Ricoh is a
shared device and I went through the same process as in setting up the Dell
network printer. No issues have occured with the Ricoh setup. SBS, Vista
Business, Office 2007 are running at both sites. The only difference are the
printers.

Both of the printers are network units that are shared from the SBS server.

Very strange.

Almost certainly this is a Dell printer driver issue. I would bring it up
with their support to see if they have a solution.
