Word 2007 had been working just fine until recently. Now, every time I try
to open a Word document, the program closes and I get the following error

it did not work. I really need to have Word functioning again! Thanks.

I don't think it is a template problem becasue I can create a new document
but cannot open and old one without crashing the program. It is a very
recent problem so I think it must be caused by an update but I'm not sure
which one.

Sounds like a bug in early versions of Vista. It was fixed in ServicePack 1.
You should be using ServicePack2. Have you run Windows Update recently?

I have had the same problem with Word 2007 and Vista. I updated Vista and
reinstalled Word 2007 and all the related service packs. I also did the
'delete the data file' fix from the registry. Word will work one time then
crash. So I have to edit the registry every time I need to use Word in order
to get it to work.

That suggests that you have a third party add-in screwing with the registry.
Check in Word Startup and Office Startup folders and any COM add-ins to see
what is installed alien to Office.

The problem could be caused by windows update KB977724, as it was my case; So
to fix this issue, you need to uninstall the update.

In Windows 2008R2, go to Start/Control Panel/Programs/Uninstall a
program/View installed updates then identify the update, right-click on it,
then select Uninstall.

If you have another version of Windows OS, if you're not able to figure out
how to get to the 'Installed windows update' window, a walkthrough should
easely be found following a search on bing.
