Word 2007 crashes when inserting headers or footers?

Having this problem on several machines. All of decent spec.
Everything is fine until you try to insert a header, footer or page
number and then the system crashes. Loses network drives, get
messsage about system being low on resources (it isn't).

If you close word down then the network drives get restored and the PC
is fine again.

I've tried re-installing Windows XP Pro from scratch along with Office
2007 Professional and doing all Windows updates. Problem still
occours.

Anyone able to help?

Sounds like a bad networked printer driver.Wordneeds to see a locally
installed, compatible printer driver set as the Windows default. Try
installing a local printer and testing again, though you should clean up the
computers after all those crashes. Seehttp://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm

This hasn't cured it.

Would appreciate more suggestions as I've run out of things to try!

What are you trying to insert into the header other than just text?

Terry

Hi Terry. The only thing other than simple text would be to insert a
page number.

Strange. Does this happen when Word is started in Safe Mode? From Start |
Run (Winkey+R), type in

winword /a

and press enter. Open a document and try inserting a H or F now. Does it
still crash?

If it does still crash, try testing with a locally install and attached
printer set as the Windows default. Does that still crash?

Terry,

Would one of the following:
Microsoft Office Document Image Writer
Microsoft XPS Document Writer
Send To OneNote 2007

suffice as a locally installed printer or should it be something like
a HP Laserjet 2100 installed?

It still crashes BTW when Word opens in Safe Mode. It is an
intermittent problem though, very difficult to pin down.

For testing, set either of the Doc Image Writer or XPS Doc Writer as the
Windows Default. Word should be happy with either of those. Alternatively,
use the Add Printer and choose the Generic Text Printer from windows.
