Word 2007 crashes when opening a file

Hi

I have a problem which I have experienced for a long time. I reinstalled
word 2007 many times to no avail. Most times when I open word, either by
opening the application or clicking on a .docx file, Word crashes with this
message

Problem signature:

I get an error message saying that Word cannot find the file. If I try
agian several times, it might open eventually. I am running Vista Ultimate
64 bit. Can anyone provide some assistance. Thank you.

Just to add - the error message I get is that "The system cannot find the
file specified". The file is there though because I just double clicked on
it. I really don't understand what is causing these errors. Any help would
be appreciated.

I don't have Norton Antivirus. I checked the addins I have and there is a
COM addin for Paperport PDF and Zeon Word PDF. I tried to remove both of
them but got a Word error message saying The connected state of Office addins
registered to HKey-Local-Machine cannot be changed. I tried to remove the
Scansoft PDF.dot template but it keeps coming back. That's it for addins,
the rest are Smart Tags and Dcoument Inspectors whateverthose are). I have a
Brother Multifunction printer as my default printer. The funny thing about
this is that it is intermittent - sometimes Word crashes with that message
and sometimes it works fine. I looked at the event viewer and the faulting
module is ntdll.dll. The following is the error message from the event
viewer:

Faulting application WINWORD.EXE, version 12.0.6211.1000, time stamp
0x46d4a7df, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp
0x4791a783, exception code 0xc0000374, fault offset 0x000aada3, process id
0x1d38, application start time 0x01c8845d33742dc0.

Thanks for any further insight into this annoying problem.

Paperport is a known problem in Word 2007. I'm not familiar with Zeon Word.
If PP won't let you remove it through the Windows Add/Remove Programs
utility, then check with PP support to get the lowdown on removal (also
check to see if they have an update for it that is compatible with 2007).

Thanks for this Terry

Actually I don't want to remove Paperport since I do use it quite
extensively. I looked around the Nuance site and they talk about addins
sometimes conflicting with each other and provide a method of deregistering
the Print to PDF addin. I am going to try that and see if it fixes the
problem. I think the syntax is

regsvr32 /u "H:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PDF Create 4\PDF
Driver\OfficeAddIn\ZnWordAddIn.dll"

I'll advise if the problem goes away.

Is this why I cannot delete the addin from Word itself, i.e. that it has to
be done through the registry?

I seem to have resolved the issue and thanks for the tip. I removed the two
COM addins relating to Paperport in Word (and related addins to Excel and
Powerpoint). I used the command listed below in a command prompt in VIsta to
issue the command. The only functionality I lose is the integrated toolbar to
print to Paperport or to pdf which you can still do anyway by selecting the
appropriate printer. I will monitor this over the next little while but so
far it looks good. Thanks again.

Thanks for your input on this problem. I have been experiencing the same
thing and I also use Paperport. Now I have a solution. Thank you again
