Word 2007 Crashes When Saves/Opens Attempted

Word 2007 with Vista has been running fine for a couple months; Nov 4th began
crashing whenever selecting file handling options "Word has encountered a
problem and must close." Have done Office Repair, and complete uninstall /
reinstall twice, once with a Dell Tech viewing the problem and conducting hte
reinstall. A second laptop, purchased at the same time with identical
configuration does not exhibit the problem. Any ideas for repair, short of
reinstalling Vista?
Thank-you in advance!

Additional Info: Just tried changing printer selection and removing Data key
in regedit; neither helped.

To summarise, are you saying that when you try to use File Open or File Save
Word crashes? Test in Safe Mode: from Start, Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Now open and save a document. Is it still unstable?

Are both the OS and Office fully patched up to date?
Is there a local printer driver installed?
Are there any mapped drives set up that are either inaccessible or invalid?

Did run Windows Update & Office Update...should be fully up to date.
How can I determine otherwise?

No local printer installed.

I don't think there are mapped drives set up, unless part of the factory
build from Dell. How do I assess this?

I will try your Safe Mode check this evening and reply.

Ah, you need to install a local printer. Word must be able to see a printer
driver; the printer doesn't have to be physically attached to the computer
(or exist at all).

Hmmmm....problem began on 11/4, same day as a Defender update from Windows
Update.....could that program be interacting with Office programs.

It happens if I click on the folder icon to open documents from a folder, and
it happens when I do a "save" or a "save as" selection.

When you say you removed the key from regedit, which key did you remove?

If you create a second user account on the computer, log in to it, launch
word, and save a file, does Word still crash?

If it doesn't crash, then...
1.) log in to the account that is having problems.
2.) run regedit
3.) Go to hk current user\software\microsoft\office\12.0
4.) Look for the key called "Word"
5.) Rename it "Word.old"
6.) Restart the computer
7.) Log in to the account again
8.) Launch word and try to save

Note: In step 5 be sure to rename the key rather than deleting it. Word will
recreate this structure if it does not find it, but on the off chance
something more critical is wrong, you can go back in and rename the key from
"Word.old" back to "Word"

Finally, this is a question for Suzanne, why do you "If it happens in Safe
Mode, then it's not a Word issue."?

I'm not trying to be rude, but I'm curious. That seems like a fire
department saying "Turn on the sprinklers. If you still feel heat and see
flames, it isn't a fire."

Does this only happen with Word: are other Office apps OK?

You have deleted the Word Data Key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data which
often gets corrupted when Windows Update runs when Word has been left
running.

Does Windows Explorer open correctly and let you double-click a document to
launch Word and the document correctly?

Yes, happens in Powerpoint too; have not tried Excel.
Yes, deleted the Data key.
Yes, double click on a document will open the document, which then can be
viewed, edited, etc.....but cannot save.

I had removed the Data key under Word in the path you stated.
How do I create a second user account?
Any thoughts on an interaction with Windows Defender?

I am experiencing the same problem -- Word 2007 "crashes" when closing or
exiting . . . were you able to find/implement a solution?!!!!?
