Word 2007, crashes when saving

Hi, I've been googling about this problem and tried out stuffs but none of
them worked and it is driving me crazy.

The problem is just as my title says. When I click save, the directory
(location to save) pops up, and when I try to navigate to the folder to be
saved, the program freezes and eventually closes/restarts itself.

Sometimes I don't even get the directory. Sometimes (though rarely) I do
make it to the folder that I want to save, but it freezes before I click save.

I am using Word 2007 Enterprise on a Vista Business 32bit. I just did the
SP2 upgrade because Windows update asked me to and still no difference. I
tried uninstalling/reinstalling, modifying the registry (deleting /data),
doing the diagnostics through control panel ... everything I've seen on
google and this website. I don't have a printer so I don't think it's
HP-related. I even tried system restore but it didn't work; a pop-up box came
up saying that the restore failed and the system files were not changed.

Thanks for all the work here.

That's a symptom of a Word Data Key corruption - usually because Word has
been running when updates are installed.

Run Regedit and expand by double-clicking to the key below. With DATA
selected, press DELETE. Word will automatically recreate a new key when it
is restarted.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

Symptoms of Data Key corruption include:

• The mouse does not work when you use Word.
• You cannot open a Word document from the Search window in Windows
Vista.
• You cannot open a Word document from Windows Desktop Search.
• Word crashes when you try to start or exit Word.
• Word crashes when you open the Open dialog box.
• Word crashes when you save a document.
• Word crashes when you close a document.

If you feel uncomfortable editing the registry yourself, Microsoft have a
fix that will do this for you.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940791 and press FixIt

Hi Terry,

Thanks for the quick reply.
I deleted HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data but the
problem doesn't go away.

One extra thing to add: When the Word crashes, it attempts to make a
temporary save to restore the lost document.

HP older printer drivers are known to cause this problem. If you have an HP
printer, try switching to a different printer driver as the Windows Default
and see if that resolves the problem.

Hi Terry,

I don't have a printer and currently it's set to the document writer as the
default.

Are you saving to your local HDD? Does it only happen when you try to save
to one particular folder? Where is it located? Is the location that listed
under File Locations in Word Options?

Terry
