Word 2007 Crashes

I believe there was an update that occured to my computer last night. Since
then Word 2007 Seems to crash often.

If i open Word and then simply close it. I get "word has stopped working"
meaning it isn't closing cleanly.

I have run diagnositcs on it...nothing. I have also "repaired" the install,
but still i get the same result. I haven't been able to find anything on how
to repair this.

Any ideas?

Ok, i still haven't found the answer but I tried starting word from the Run
Command using WinWord /a this worked fine and i was able to stop fine as well

So then i checked th add-ins. I had one add-in called Snag-it.

I tried to remove it but it wouldn't remove. I uninstalled Snag-it...checked
the registry in word add-ins and made sure it wasn't there.

It wasn't

However when i open up word. It still looks like it is there

I, too, have the same problem and have gotten nowhere toward a solution. Two
additional pieces of information. When I call up Word, the mouse no longer
functions within the document portion of the screen, i.e. can't move the
cursor or highlight records. Also, when trying to open a document that is
password protected, the document simply doesn't come up and no request for
password occurs. Then, as you have seen, closing Word crashes it.

I also have Snagit but even stopping the Snagit processes and removing the
add-ins doesn't affect the problem.

More info. If you totally remove Snagit8, the mouse works again and password
protected files will open. Word still crashes when you try to close it,
however.

More info: I just totally removed MS Office 2007 and reloaded it. The
problem still exists.

That leads to another question. In other threads, people mention that
corrupt normal.dotm files can cause problems. When Office is removed, does
it leave all these files in place so that I am still working with corrupt
files of some sort?

Can you just delete normal.dotm and have it still work?

Any ideas how I can get Word to work again?

Yes, uninstalling rarely solves problems because it doesn't take away user's
templates, registry settings, add-ins, etc. So the incompatible add-ins or
corruption is still ready to crash Word. One way to test is to start Word in
Safe Mode: from the Run command (Winkey+R) type in

winword /a

and press enter. If Word opens and closes correctly in this mode, then it is
conclusive that the problem is third party add-ins, printer driver or
normal.dotx. See the following document which although for previous
versions, is still very relevant for Office 2007:

Thank you! Once I deleted the registry key it all works again.

\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

I was having this same problem. I didn't delete the registry key:

\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

at first because I am the cautious type. So I renamed. After restarting
word, my mouse works and I did not crash on exit. A new Data key was created
so I comfortably deleted my renamed key.

Thank you very much your post was a great help.

I have been having problems with word crashing when I try to save documents.
I came across this post and deleted the data registry key discussed. Still
crashes when trying to save either .doc or .docx. I can however, save
templates .dot. Some of the posts blame addins for the problems. Can I delete
the Addins keys safely to see if that helps?

Try starting Word in safe mode (hold down Ctrl as Word is starting, and
click Yes to the Safe Mode prompt). This is a way to eliminate other
influences such as add-ins and registry keys without having to go on a
fishing expedition.

Is this happening with all documents, or only with particular documents?
