Word 2007 crashes

I keep getting the error on Ms Word doc's (Compatibility-Mode) and when I
click on close, the app crashes. i am unable to highlight any text nor right
click and copy.
How do I resolve this conflict please?

The Word 2007 title bar will say "compatibility mode" when you
open a Word 97-2003 .doc file in Word 2007. This "feature" is by
design. It is neither an error message nor a conflict.
