This worked for me - and I was going insane!

To delete the Word Data registry key, follow these steps:

1. Exit all Office programs.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry subkey, as appropriate for the version of Word that you are running:
* Word 2002:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft \Office\10.0\Word\Data
* Word 2003:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Office\11.0\Word\Data
* Word 2007:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Office\12.0\Word\Data
4. Click Data, and then click Export on the File menu.
5. Name the file Wddata.reg, and then save the file to the desktop.
6. Click Delete on the Edit menu, and then click Yes.
7. Exit Registry Editor.
8. Start Word.

If Word starts and works correctly, you have resolved the problem. The problem was a damaged Word Data registry key. You may have to change several settings to restore your favorite options in Word.

If the problem is not resolved, restore the original Word Data registry key. Then, see the ?Delete the Word Options registry key? topic.

To restore the original Word Data registry key, follow these steps:

1. Exit all Office programs.
2. Double-click the Wddata.reg icon on the desktop.
3. Click Yes, and then click OK.

Any chance you can tell us what the fix was? I have taught my parrot a whole new set of words in the process of trying to fix this annoying problem -- all to no avail! I know several others who have the same issue, and all are pulling their hair out!
Thanks,
Velvet.

Word 2007 not responding after updates - Endnote X1 conflict?
Help! My version of Word 2007 suddenly does not respond after yesterday's
automatic updates. I was happily working on a document when my computer
restarting yesteday without warning. When I restarted word by opening one of
those documents, I got a dialogue box reading "! An Unknown Error Occurred".
This dialogue box appears to be an Endnote X1 dialogue box, as that Endnote
X1 was written in the title bar of that box? When I click "ok" on that box,
it dissapears and Word 2007 is open, but it hangs and then says (not
responding) if I try to do anything such as type or choose one of the
recovered files, or close the recovered files box. I had purchased and added
in Endnote X1 at least a month ago and have had no problems until now.
Endnote will actually still open from within Word, but I can't work on the
document. These circumstances suggest to me that one of the updates that came
through yesterday made Word stop working and that this had something to do
with Endnote. The thing is that none of those updates were Word updates,
though two of them were Windows Vista updates (I'm using Vista home premium
OEMAct edition). Can anyone help me out there?

You could try removing the recent updates, remove the Word 2007 add-in,
You could try removing the recent updates, remove the Word 2007 add-in,
re-apply the updates. Now test for the problem (or any other). Now
re-install the add in. Retest

And indeed that is a pain to do especially given that there is no
assurance that it will help with the problem

Thanks Tom, A Thompson Endnote guy helped me fix the problem over the phone.
Thanks Tom, A Thompson Endnote guy helped me fix the problem over the phone.
We simply disconnected the Endnote add-in from Word (without uninstalling
either or removing and re-installing the updates). We then re-connected the
two and it then worked. Forgive my lack of jargon, but the fact that it now
works is all I care about. Thanks for your help, Tom

:

oving the recent updates, remove the Word 2007 add-in,

Great.
Great. It is good when you can solve a problem without resorting to
something more extreme.
