Word 2007 - document in read-only mode after XP SP3 install

I was able to update some documents on my XP machine until I installed XP SP3.
Now, I can't update the documents even though the documents are not marked
'Read-only'.

I tried to search for this issue in the forum, but was unable to find a
resolution. I tried some of the suggestions that I thought would work, but
they haven't.
