Word 2007 does not print wrapped syllables in hyphenated words

C

Cliff

When I print a document that has justified, hyphenated text, syllables are
randomly omitted. This occurs when a word is being broken (hyphenated) at the
end of the line. New lines start with the syllables after a hyphen, but the
syllables before the hyphen are missing.

Compare this (correct on-screen display)

To this (incorrect printout)

This happens in many of my documents, on different computers. Is there any
workaround or hotfix for this? I can't use Word to print as is.

I agree with Suzanne though |I am not sure about it being corrupt. There has
been a complete change in the document as though you are working with one
printer active as the default whilst editing but then you print to a totally
different printer using a different printer driver. You must use the same
printer driver for consistency of layout as every printer (and printer
driver) is different which result in different text flow and layouts.

Well it is 'symbols that are randomly missing' and that may be because of
trying to use inadmissible characters for the different printer driver - and
possibly printing to a printer that is set to use internal fonts (like the
older LaserJets).

No, it is not "symbols that are randomly missing." It's chunks of text. If
you look at http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z224/worderror/Printout.png,
you'll see that one line begins with the "ence" of "influence," but "influ-"
does not appear on the previous line. In the next line, we get "measurements
of ambient environmental tions," where "conditions" is meant. And another
sentence says, "no gradient from high to low is dent," where the "evi-" is
missing at the end of a line. Some hyphenated words do appear properly, but
these missing bits are quite mysterious.

Thanks for your replies--

but I am fairly confident that the printer is not the problem. I have tried
several printers, both as default and non-default, on different computers,
and the problem persists. None of the printers are set to use printer fonts,
and the drivers are the ones supplied by Microsoft. Also, the document is
set to U.S. English, proofing tools are installed and work correctly, and
the problem occurs regardless of whether WordPerfect justification is turned
on.

Suzanne is right on the text reflow. Word 2007 seems to have terrible reflow
problems. The document reflows in unpredictable ways when I, e.g., toggle
paragraph marks. E.G.: if I turn paragraph marks on, the document reflows.
When I turn them off, it reflows again. If I repeat the process, it reflows
in entirely *different* ways. (This happens even when no text is hidden.)
These reflow problems seem to be centered around word-breaking/hyphenation.

The grammar checker states that "states" has incorrect subject-verb
agreement. Deleting "Indeed," or ", such as Wyoming and South Dakota,"
placates it!

Interestingly confused grammar checker! What does it do if you make states
into States?

Terry

C

Cliff

Woah, it accepts "States!" Maybe it reasons that capitalized words are
proper nouns and thus singular? (E.G., "Gates donated $3 billion dollars.")

Cliff

I guess it 'interprets' states as being of a verb and States as being an
abbreviation for the United States.

When I have seen text flow problems of this type, they were definitely the
result of document corruption. I'd suggest again that you treat the document
as corrupt.

I've played with this and cannot replicate the problem you are seeing. I am
using the default Automatic Hyphenation with Arial 10pt text fully justified
and it works fine. Are you using default hyphenation or what setting changes
have you made?

Are you using an 'unusual' font? Have you tried a different font to make
sure it isn't a damaged font set? Are all your printer drivers from the
Windows disk? Have you tried using the latest drivers from the
manufacturers' support sites? There are quite a few printer driver not
working correctly with Office 2007.

Well other than seeing the word 'greater' duplicated, I don't see a problem
with the last 2 lines.

I suggest downloading printer drivers direct from the printer manufacturer's
support sites as most of the drivers (printer and graphics) included on
Windows disks are usually early beta drivers.

Do you not see that the last two lines begin with "formation" (for
"Information") and "bour" (for "Labour")?

Suzanne

Now I do: I was looking at the last 2 lines at the bottom of the page.

I have never seen that happen before but it sure looks like a printer driver
problem to me.

Cliff

Is it possible for you to make that same page available for us to download
as a Word Document to test please?

Hi,
I got the same kind of problems printing your document (´Document.docx¡)
from Word 2007 to a Canon i550 printer.

I opened this same document in Word 2007, then saved it as a Word 97-2003
DOC file. When I printed that Word 97-2003 file from Word 2007, it printed
with none of the reflow problems mentioned in this thread.

I have no explanation for this except that the current printer drivers
might not be quite attuned to the new Word 2007 ´docx¡ format yet.

But it seems that you have a workaround if you want your document to print
correctly. Save it as a Word 97-2003 DOC file.

Cheers,
Robert

Forget my request: I have now been able to open these in Word 2007 (the
first time I tried, the Save option was greyed out and when I clicked OPEN,
it opened in the Office Picture Manager as a graphic... very weird). But now
I have opened them successfully and both are absolutely fine in Word 2007 on
my system that uses a Canon Pixma IP5200 printer and ATi Radeon graphics
card. Drivers are the latest from the manufacturers for Windows Vista.

I am sure that your problem is a driver issue.
