Word 2007 error when saving

D

Deb

Attempting to save a Word 2002 doc as a Word 2007 docx.

I receive the following error message -
Cannot save the file.'MPD_ITMeetingAgenda20081125.docx'is not a valid short
file name (maximum eight characters, plus a three-character file extension).
Type a valid file name, and then save the file again. FYI - I was not able to
reproduce the problem in Excel 2007.
Any help is appreciated and thanks,

Can't recall having seen this kind of issue in the last 10 years...

Is this happening only with this one document? Only with Word 2002 documents? Or
with all files you open/create in Word 2007?

If with all files, if you hold down Ctrl when starting Word, to put it into Safe
Mode, does the restriction disappear?

How about WHERE you're trying to save the file? Is this your hard-drive, a
diskette or USB stick, a network location, something else?

The user is trying to save to a network drive. (My entire organization has
not upgraded to MS 2007 yet, just IT.) We are testing our problems first and
I am the support. I will troubleshoot more with the problem since I know this
should not happen. Thank you for your assistance.

In that case, I'd have the user see what happens if they try to save to a local
folder. If that's OK, then I'd check whether there's something going on with the
network interface...

Cindy,
The user got the same error trying to save to his local drive. I also asked
him to try and save a different 2002 document in Word 2007. He gets the same
error with any document. He does not get the error if he starts from a blank
document. By the way, I am on the same network and do not have the problem.
Could there be something in his settings/preferences that are different?
Thank you for you help,

So, the problem is with any/all Word 2002 documents, but not with any "native"
Word 2007 documents? (Even ones that have been saved, then re-opened?)

I notice you haven't given any answer to the question in my first reply about
what happens when using Safe Mode?

Cindy,
Sorry for the late reply. I have been on vacation and you are right the user
did not try in Safe Mode. I will ask again for him to try Safe Mode and get
back with you.
Thank you,

Hi Deb,
User gets same error when run in safe mode
Then quite frankly, I'm pretty much out of ideas. At this point, my best guess
would be that there's a problem with a Converter. Have you tried "repairing" the
Office installation? In the Windows "Programs" list, under the entry for Office
you should find something like "Microsoft Office Tools". That should contain a
tool for Microsoft Office Diagnostics. Try running that and see if it makes a
difference (note: it may need the original installation media).

Cindy,
Ran the diagnostic tool - Received dialog box with results of no problem -
still having the same problem with not being able to save earlier versions of
Word.
**I am finding this problem is not isolated to one user.
Thank you for all your troubleshooting!

At this point, I'm out of ideas. I think you may need to open a (paid) support
issue with Microsoft in order to get to the bottom of whatever is going on. It
sounds like there may be some kind of problem in your company's system
configuration, but I have no idea what that might be.
