Word 2007 file format reverts back to docx

After I change the default file format to doc 97/2003 it reverts back to docx
after about a couple of hours. I change it using the Office button and
clicking on Word options. I don' t have more than one instance of Word
running when I do it. Has anyone else had this problem?

There are several reports of this problem. It is usually due an incompatible
add-in or a Registry Cleaner utility.
