Word 2007 file storage error

I am using Word 2007 but attempting to store a file as a Word 97-2003
document. One (1) particular document is saved as a .doc file but can only
be accessed by others if they have Word 2007 and change the extension from
..doc to .docx. For me, it opens without problem with the .doc extension. I
believe it is actually being stored in the Word 2007 file format.

Any ideas???

Is "Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)" selected in the Save as type pulldown in
the File Save As dialog? or was the extension just changed to .doc?

This document was saved as a "Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc)" using the save
as facility. There are two (2) files for which this problem occurs. When
anyone else accesses, they get the error, even if using Word 2007 (unless the
extension is changed to .docx manually).

Any ideas??

Word should be able to recognize its files regardless of the extension.
There is one sure way to establish whether the file is a docx file being
wrongly named as doc and that is to change the extension to zip. Then open
it with WinZip or WinRar. If the file is a true docx format file it will
open as a zipped archive containing a number of folders. If it is a doc file
it won't open as doc is not a compressed archive.

If it turns out to be docx then you need to see
