Word 2007 gone into low graphics mode

I've recently completed a fresh vista installation.
After installing Office 2007, Word runs in some sort of strange low graphics
mode and threw 'out of memory errors' a couple of times.
All other Office programs work correctly.
Office 2007 looks like this:

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office; the problem still persists.
I have checked compatibility mode, which is disabled.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

Check the Accessibility Options in Control Panel to make sure you don't have
"High Contrast" enabled.

There is only 'Ease of Access Center' in the control panel, nothing about
Accessibility Options, but I assume you are referring to the same thing.

There is not a direct option to enable or disable high contrast, the Ease of
Access Center implies this is only changed with the Windows Theme, which is
currently set to 'Aero' - not a high contrast scheme.

Also, it is only Word that is effected by the low bit graphics, so I think
the problem is with Word, not Vista.

I've never seen that happen before. It is definitely in low resolution, but
I'm not sure why. I suggest that you check that both your graphics and
printer drivers are up to date as either of these could cause display
problems.

I have exactly the same problem - my display driver and printer drivers are
up to date. Any ideas please ?

I have discovered a solution to my problem - I have reverted to the Vista
Theme instead of a photo as wallpaper and word is now displaying correctly !

Does Word exhibit the same problem if you start it in safe mode? Hold down
Ctrl as Word is starting, and click Yes to starting in Safe mode.

Also... note that Suzie Q has found a solution to her similar problem. Does
her solution apply to your situation, or have you not changed Vista's theme?

If starting in Safe mode doesn't "fix" the problem (albeit temporarily),
what about if you start Windows using a different user profile. Does the
problem still happen there?

Note that uninstalling and reinstalling seldom helps with Word problems,
since Word tries to preserve settings when you remove and reinstall. Given
what you're seeing, doing a repair (the next step if safe mode and a
different user profile don't yield positive results) might help, though,
since it uses a different process than reinstallation.
