word 2007 hangs--I hope you can help!

i just installed home and student 2007 version on xp. word hangs when i
open, save, insert, close, anything! up to 20 literal seconds per key
stroke. I have checked for updates, run diagnostics, configured changes,
there is more than 1/2 of memory, and no add-ins. Also, I am saving in format
and then checking the 97-2003 compatibility box. It doesn't work any faster
with new files than the old.
i'm not sure what else to do. can I uninstall and reinstall or is that a
waste of time?
Less importantly, since this installation, the junk mailbox in Outlook
doesn't work properly.

I appreciate your advice, Graham. Sorry for the delay, I did not receive a
notification of your reply. At any rate, no luck here. I went over everything
and got as far as the registry change, but did not see a "data" or "toolbar"
folder as stated in the directions. I did find a toolbar under 12, common,
toolbar, settings which led to a REG_BINARY file. is that the one I am
supposed to delete?
Also, I tried to uninstall and reinstall. At first it wouldn't let me but
after deleting the compatability pack, it did. Reinstalling has had no
effect.
anti-virus is webroot. Any other ideas?

I appreciate your response, Graham. I have tried all of these things and
nothing is working! The exception is the registry edit--I did not see
toolbars or data under 12. I did see 12>commoms>toolbars>setting and then a
REG_BINARY file. Is that one I should delete?
I have webroot anti-vrus.
I uninstalled and reinstalled (It only allowed an uninstall after deleting
the compatability pack) but no change.
any other ideas?

The registry key to delete is
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data
which will be present if Word 2007 is installed.
Re-installing will not affect the problem as it does not affect the issues
that lead to the fault conditions, Word being designed to retain user
settings. Work through all the trouble shooting tips at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm .
Having eliminated the more obvious issues from that list, as suggested
earlier, investigate also what add-ins you have and try renaming the normal
template normal.dotm.
