Word 2007 Hangs on Open

I recently upgraded my system from Office 2000 P.E. to Office 2007 S.E. All
Office programs open and perform fine, but Word 2007 consistently freezes as
soon as I try to type. If I click the icons, it is fine, but when I type it,
it freezes, and I see message lower left "Contacting Program Files..." Press
Esc to Escape. Then it freezes. I tried to repair/uninstall and reinstall,
but the problem persists.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

More information since my earlier post:

Word 2007 opens to blank page. I can navigage through the various icons on
the Toolbar. As soon as I type on the keyboard, I get a message in thte
lower message bar "Connecting to Printer... Press Esc to Cancel." Words
shuts down about 2 more times then on the 3rd or 4th try, Word opens, I can
type, and open documents. I do not have a printer installed on my home
laptop. Does Word 2007 need a printer to run? I sometimes get a message
"Not enough memory or disk space to display font." I am at my wit's end, so
if there are any Word gurus out there, I'd appreciate any help or
suggestions. At this point, I'm ready to go back to Office 2000.

Thanks,
