Word 2007 has encountered a problem and needs to close

When closing an open document Word has suddenly started giving the above
message and closes and re-opens. The following message also appears
" word cannot open the file ~WRS{248E928F-0EA7-493C-B679-DAB6B46EB785}.tmp.
If the file is stored on your computer, there may be a problem with your
hardware. If the file is stored on the network, there may be a problem with
the network connection. If you can copy the file, try saving the file in
another location and opening it there."
the file name characters change each time. I am also experiencing something
similar in Powerpoint.
Any suggestions as to why this is happening.

Jomark,

Have you tried to see if there any office updates avialable for your
installation. Most of the times this has worked for me. You can also
reregister word by start, run, winword /r.

thanks for the suggestions.
i have the latest updates.
I tried your other suggestion but no luck.
I think the problem may either be caused by a recent other application
installation creating a conflict or my Normal.dot has become corrupted.
I will try a system restore to an earlier date

Just rename your normal.dot, Word will create a new one on startup

sorry for the delay in responding but I have been trying various options.
My problem is that the office installation has been corrupted and I cannot
uninstall or re-install office 2007 upgrade.
I get the message "The product installation has been corrupted. Run setup
again from the CD,DVD or other installation source."
This does not work as it will not recognise my previous versions either
still installed on my computer or from the original disks.
I have tried following KB928218 as an alternative method of uninstalling but
this fails because one file cannot be removed.
If I can first remove Office 2007 then I will be able to reinstall it. That
is the problem!
I have a good installation on my laptop and I was wondering if I were
possible to delete the Office 2007 msi file on my computer and copy the msi
file from the laptop onto the computer.
Word still functions but there are problems when closing files.

after playing around I have suddenly been able to uninstall Office 2007 via
Add/Remove programs in my control panel. I don't know why this happened.
i am however no better off after reinstalling fresh from my disk as i still
have the original problem in Word and Powerpoint. Excel and Access appear to
be fine so far.

If you read all the other threads (and there are hundreds) complaining of
the same problem, you will read that uninstalling and reinstalling rarely
fixes any Office problems. This problem is almost certainly a third party
add-in. To prove this, start Word in Safe Mode. From Start, Run (Winkey+R)
type in

winword /a

and press enter. Does Word close now without erroring? If tit does close
now, then there is an incompatible add-in that is breaking Word's Close
command.

it makes no difference. The problem still occurs in safe mode. When starting
in normal mode the blank document 1 appears. If a previous document is then
opened, document 1 disappears. Closing the open document causes the error
message and Word to restart. It doesn't seem to be with every existing
document that the error occurs when exiting.
however if a new document is created from a template, document 1 does not
disappear but on exiting the error message appears.
I have disabled all third party addins listed in Word and I agree that there
is probably a conflict with a third party application, but which one? That is
the question

The simple way that usually (but not always) works is to empty the Word
Startup folder: test to see if that resolves the closing problem. Then add
the templates back into the Startup folder one at a time until the problem
recurs.

sorry for the delay in responding as it has taken some time to resolve.
the problem seems to have been with Windows XP. when starting Windows in
safe mode, the problem disappeared. isolating each item in start up did not
resolve anything. I ran scannow and this did not seem to help. disabling all
items in services rectified the problem. checking each item in services
narrowed the problem down to Microsoft services. However, unselecting all
Microsoft services and re-activating each one individually did not find the
culprit.
the good news is that it seems to have fixed the problem and i am no longer
getting the error message either in Word or Powerpoint. I will monitor the
situation to see if it recurs.

yes I did because running word in safe mode and carrying out your suggestions
did not resolve the problem.
running msconfig and starting Windows in safe mode did not create the
problem so then I carried out a selective startup and disabled all startup
items and it did not resolve the problem. I ran sfc /scannow and the problem
still persisted.
I then disabled all Services and the problem was resolved.
i then activated only Microsoft services and the problem still existed.
I then re-activated each Microsoft service in turn to try and isolate the
service giving the problem but none of the services "owned up".
Bottom line, whatever I did resolved the problem.

on reflection though and as I had some problems with other programs I
suspect that the problem might have had something to do with System Restore
as I had restored a number of times.

i have finally found out what was causing the problem. I recently installed
a new HP L7680 printer and this has been the problem. My previous printer did
not give any problem but switching to the new printer produced the error
messages in Word and Powerpoint. uninstalling and re-installing the drivers
from the supplied cd did not work. Downloading the software from HP and
carrying out a cleanup using the cleanup tool before re-installing the
downloaded software has cured the problem.
i note in one of your latest responses that printers can cause problems with
Word.
