Word 2007 in compatability mode-Table Captions

T

tinks

I have multiple Pictures pasted as Enhanced Metafiles into my Word Document.
I would like to Caption these so the Table Title appears in my Table of
Contents. However, since the Table name is already in the picture we don't
want the Table Title to appear in the Capition but show in the TOC. I tried
using hidden font for the Caption title but then it is invisible in the TOC
as well. Any suggestions for a different way to do this?

Use TC fields (these don't print) to create the captions in the document.
Then create a TOC based on the TC fields.

To insert each TC field, press Alt+Shift+O; this displays the Mark Table of
Contents Entry dialog box. For "Entry," type the text you want to show. Pick
a "Table identifier." "T" is suitable since you are creating a list of
tables. "Level" should be set to "1." When you are done, click Mark; the
dialog stays open so that you can repeat the procedure for the other
pictures/tables in the document.

Place the insertion point where you want the list of tables. Press Ctrl+F9;
Word inserts field delimiters, { }. Type in the following code:

{ TOC \f "T" \h }

Press F9 to update the TOC.

To show/hide (most) field codes, use Alt+F9. Click the ¶ button on the Home
tab whenever you want to toggle the display of your TC fields (they are
formatted as hidden).

My report template has the TOC based on Heading Styles. So the only way to
get around this is to have them all as TC fields?

No, you can have two TOC fields in the same document. (Actually, every table
of figures or list of tables is a TOC field.)
