Word 2007 in Vista Not Responding even after uninstall/reinstall

I'm running Vista with Office 2007. I have a fully-licensed OEM version of
Office Small Business 2007 (a 3-month old Lenovo T61 laptop with 3 megs of
RAM and a brand new hard drive, one month old).

When I set up my new hard drive, I installed Office 2007 from my OEM Office
DVD. It ran okay for two weeks. Suddenly it started failing. If I open an
existing doc (or docx), the cursor doesn't move or allow typing, and in the
title bar, I see "Not Responding" and must shut down in Task Manager. If I
create a new file, I can type and the file appears to save, but when I try to
close the application I get the "Not Responding" message and again must close
down in Task Manager.

So I uninstalled Office and reinstalled it from my DVD. The exact same
problem occurred. So I uninstalled it again, and this time downloaded the
trial version from the microsoft website. The exact same problem occurred
again!

I'm fairly technical, have had experience with development tools requiring a
'clean uninstall' before a reinstall...and I'm wondering if that would solve
my problem. But if that's the problem, I need to be told what to remove, and
exactly how.

Lenovo support tells me that this doesn't sound like a hardware issue. That
I should first attempt uninstall/reinstall in Safe Mode...that doing so
should provide a clean uninstall. I have my doubts.

They also said that, using Lenovo Rescue & Recovery programs, I can choose
the 'Rescue Files' option, choose the 'Restore System' option, then choose
the 'Windows Files Only' option (after selecting a restore-point). And that
this will safely restore only Windows files...presuming that some Vista file
became corrupted.

Since the installation of Word failed after only 2 or 3 weeks on a brand new
hard drive (formatted and set up in mid-October), I guess I should restore
the Windows files from the earliest possible restore point. But I'm nervous
that I'll lose application settings or data.

Why is this happening? I've googled the issue and found others with similar
problems.

Note: I did NOT reinstall the Outlook CD during one of my
uninstall/reinstall attempts, because I don't use Outlook, ever. However,
when I installed the trial version from MS website, Outlook did install.

Please help me...since it appears to be a bug in Vista or Office 2007 and
with phone support I must pay $50, which seems unreasonable.) Will a
safe-mode uninstall/reinstall actually remove Registry entries and provide
the basis for a clean install? Is Lenovo correct that the next move would be
to restore Windows-only files from my oldest restore point (with an October
date)?
