Word 2007 Intelligent Barcode

Are barcodes intelligent? The barcode produced by Word is POSTNET.

The USPS no longer accepts that format for bulk mail discounts -- see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897290. You might as well not use the
barcode feature at all. However the barcode field is still available and can
be inserted into a document.

That's the right starting place. Before downloading any of the
software and fonts, though, read and understand the Getting Started
document,
https://ribbs.usps.gov/intelligentm...h_guides/getstrtd/USPSIMB_Getting_Started.pdf

It says, in part, "A Mailer Identifier (Mailer ID or MID) is
required... the MID should be obtained from the local Business Mail
Entry Unit (BMEU)... Mail owners and mail preparers will be assigned a
6-digit or 9-digit Mailer Identifier based on criteria established by
the Postal Service."

You can't create valid barcodes until you have been assigned an MID,
so I suggest that you ask the USPS local unit for assistance with the
rest of the procedure while you're applying there.
