Word 2007 intermittent crash

Word 2007 looks up during typing (not while saving or printing, not
envelopes or merge, just plain text entry). CPU goes to 100%. The 'close
window' 'X' icon in upper right becomes larger with red background. Program
must be shut down.
Locks up on newly created docs. Locks up opening old docs in Word 2003
format.
Crashes occur ten minutes to 3 hours apart during continuous use.
System is running under Windows XP on brand new Dell Optiplex 2 MB RAM.
All windows and office updates are installed. HP 2420 is attached. Dell
standard keyboard. Microsft wireless mouse.
Only third party add-in is Spellex medical spell checker. Tried
uninstalling and reinstalling Spellex spell check software.
Tried turning off Auto-save.
Tried not using compatibility mode.
Office diagnostics report no problems.
Event viewer shows no other antecedent or corollary issue or conflict.
Just app failure of MS- Word.
I am utterly, totally stumped and about ready to dump MS-Office. Anybody
got any very specific ideas about what to try next? Where to look?

Test to see if this is Word or an 'outside' problem such as macros, add-ins
or printer driver. Open Word in Safe Mode and test to see if the problem
recurs. From Start Run (Winkey+R) type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word is now in its default install mode: test to see if the
problem recurs which will give us an idea where to start looking.

I believe that is completely different. This looks like a Canon printer
driver module. Try deleting your printer. Go to Canon and check that you
have the latest driver and then reinstall the printer.

We are having the same problem. We are running XP, and using McAffee Internet
Security to provide Parental Controls, etc.
This is causing major problems, in that multiple users have lost hours of
work (school and work at home) due to this issue.
I am ready to scrap the whole system and get us a Mac for Crhistmas.
