Word 2007 NOT RESPONDING in Vista Ultimate on 64bit DELL laptop

Hi:
I have a 64bit machine, running Vista Ultimate. When I create a new
document in Word, then try to make formatting changes (i.e. change fonts,
highlight text, etc.) a white, semi-transparent film descends over the screen
and the massage appears that the program is not responding.

Are both OS and Word fully patched? Is this a new problem?

If it is new, it may be the following is applicable.

That may be a symptom of a Word Data Key corruption - usually because Word
has been running when updates are installed.

Run Regedit and expand by double-clicking to the key below. With DATA
selected, press DELETE. Word will automatically recreate a new key when it
is restarted.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

Symptoms of Data Key corruption may include:

• The mouse does not work when you use Word.
• You cannot open a Word document from the Search window in Windows
Vista.
• You cannot open a Word document from Windows Desktop Search.
• Word crashes when you try to start or exit Word.
• Word crashes when you open the Open dialog box.
• Word crashes when you save a document.
• Word crashes when you close a document.

If you feel uncomfortable editing the registry yourself, Microsoft have a
download that will do this for you. See MSKB 940791

Terry:

I received this refurbrished Dell laptop when they could not fix my other
laptop. So I am new to Vista and new to a 64bit machine.

I went to Ctrl Panel, Programs and highlighted Office and clicked to repair
it. That seems to have done the trick.

But thank you for your immediate reply.

Can you refer me to any relatively simple books that will help me understand
Vista Ultimate and the differences between a 32 bit and 64 bit machine?

I suggest posting to the Vista Newsgroup asking them to recommend books or
sites for Vista.

Hello, I have been having the same issue with 64bit Vista on my Lenovo
laptop. It started with a power failure (even through my power strip), then
Word would hang on every file opened or restored. This tip solved the
problem. Thanks so much!

Thank you very much. I suddenly got "(Not Responding)" messages on anything I
tried to do in Word 2007. I uninstalled and reinstalled Office with no
improvement. Your advice worked. Being a coward about messing with the
registry, I used the download from Microsoft that you linked to and ran their
fix. Word is now again responding. Thanks again for the helpful post.
