word 2007 only picks-up network mailmerge data in read-only mode

Hi guys. Can anyone enlighten me on how to fix my laptop word 2007
software from only allowing mail merge data from the network server to
be used in read only mode? I often change that data "on-the fly"
within the mail-merge document and need to save the new data but
cant. Any Ideas? Thanks for any input. Cheers
