Word 2007 opens in a loop

I have installed Office 2007 standard (upgrade from Office 2003). Word 2007
is giving me a ton of problems, including slow performance, opening in a loop
(after splash screen, main screen flashes, then goes dead, then flashes, then
goes dead). The loop is worst when double-clicking on a document (as opposed
to double-clicking on the Word icon). I'm running it on a Dell P4 2.8Gb CPU
with 1Gb RAM, plenty of HD space, Win XP Pro, and no unusual 3rd party apps.
Frankly, MS Outlook runs slowly as well. All Office 2007 applications run at
normal speed on my VAIO laptop (Centrino 1.7Gb CPU, Win XP Pro, 1Gb
RAM)...but not on my desktop). Thoughts?

Hi rsnadel,

If you have not already done so, try running the Office Diagnostics (Start=>Programs=>Microsoft Office) as a starting point and try
starting Word 2007 while holding the control key to see if that changes the result. That should start Word without interference of
external templates or add-ins. Do you get the same problems in that method?

Thanks, Bob. I did run the Diagnostics after sending the initial note. It
found and corrected one error (I believe it was in the last stage). I then
restarted the computer. Word 2007 is now opening a little faster, and was
able to open both .doc and .docx files with only one "flash" this time, and
not the endless looping. So perhaps the diagnostic found the problem. Word
and Outlook still run much slower than on my laptop (and MUCH slower than
Office 2003); it is possible that's because I didn't install instant search

Bob:
This morning I had additional problems with Word 2007. I copied an article
from IE7 into Word, and then printed it. But when I went to the Office button
and tried to "Close" the document without saving, it started Flashing again.
I then did a Force Quit to get out. I then tried to start with the Control
key down, and after asking if I wanted to open in Safe mode, it did seem to
open a bit cleaner (sorry for the lack of specificity in that term). So I
quit, and then tried to open a .docx document while holding down the Control
key. When it opened, it started Flashing again, and did that probably a dozen
or more time before opening (it's a one page document, not a lengthy piece).
By the time it opened, I had already begin the Force Quit process again.
Bottom line...Word is having a problem that none of the other Office apps is
having. And again, Word and Outlook run significantly slower on my desktop
than previous version, and compared to how they run on my laptop. Do you
think the Instant Search could be involved? Can I deinstall it? Thanks for
your help.
