Word 2007 Problem

E

Eli

Using Win XP S/P 3, Office Standard 2007
When I try to open Word, one of 3 things happen:
1. I get the Word window but the "Styles" icons are missing. When I try to
use Word, I get "Not Responding"
2. I get a blank blue screen - not the BSOD
3. I get a plain white Window.

I can get a functioning Word program by typing (excluding the quote marks)
"winword /a"

The fact that the /a switch avoids the problems means that one (or more) of the
following is the cause:

- A damaged Normal.dotm template.
- A damaged or incompatible add-in.
- A damaged registry entry.

To troubleshoot, do these steps in order:

- With Word shut down, go to the folder %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates. Rename
Normal.dotm as OldNormal.dotm and then restart Word, which creates a
factory-default Normal.dotm. If that stops the problems, you can transfer any
customizations from OldNormal.dotm to Normal.dotm and discard OldNormal.dotm.

- If the problem is still present, disable or uninstall any add-ins. They'll be
listed in Word's dialog at Office button > Word Options > Add-Ins. Then start
restoring them, one at a time, and restarting Word to see which (if any) cause
the problems to start again.

- If you get to here without solving the problem, try Office button > Word
Options > Resources > Diagnose. Among other things, this will verify the
registry entries associated with Word.

Jay,
Thank you for your suggestions.
1. I renamed the normal template as you suggested. I started Word and had
the same problem opening it. Went to the templates folder and there was no
new Normal.dotm folder.
2. Went to Word Options>Add-Ins and disabled the add-ins. Word now works!

Thank you for solving the problem!
