Word 2007: Protect Document

In Word 2007, I am unable to protect a document under "Restrict Formatting
and Editing."

Once options 1 and or 2 are selected, Opton 3 does not allow you to start
enforcement. The "Yes, Start Enforcement" button is shaded grey and cannot
be selected. Why is this so? And is there a work around?

Is the document setup like a form? Does it contain form fields and such? If
so then more than likely you have ActiveX controls in the document.

Hi Beth,

Thank you for the reply. The document in questioned is a forms fill-in
document that was created in Word 2003.

Then you need to check for ActiveX controls. It's likely a check box, image
control, or a command button. The way to find it is to press Alt+F9 to
toggle the display of field codes. Those that are ActiveX controls will have
{CONTROL Forms.<type of control>}.

You need to remove those you find and replace them with another control
since you can't protect a document if this type of control is used in the
document, which is true of previous versions of Word as well.
