After we have saved the same document a few times it automatically is saved
as a Read Only document. We are not on a network- just an individual program.
What to do?
Thanks for any help.

I am having the same problem.

Using Vista, local document, has only happened with the new file format.

This is also happening to me on brand new PC (Win. XP Prof.) with Office
2007. The files that were opened are 2003 files are are staying in that
format (not .docx in other words). I am also working on files locally. It is
now doing this with every file I open. Is there anyone who knows what we can
do to fix?

Thx,

Word 2007, capricious daemon that it is, is spuriously adding password
protection to files. Luckily, I found the location of the problem and offer
it here for all who are plagued with this bug. Under the big fat Office
Button, click Save As and choose the type of file (such as 97-2003 document).
In the Save As dialog box, select Tools > General Options. Clear the password
in the Password to modify field, then click OK. Now isn't that intuitive?
Hope this helps someone.

A good solution but are you saying that the password option is sticky (i.e.
once you set a password for one 97-2003 document, it will act on any other
97-2003 document you happen to open and save without further prompt)?

Terry,
There is some kind of stickiness here, but it makes no sense. I discovered
that a file received from another location had a password (call it doc. A). I
asked the person who sent it if they had added password protection. He had
not. So I don't know how that password was added. I opened my document (doc.
B, and copied in a few paragraphs from doc. A (only half a page, really).
Also copied Excel data into a "working file" (doc. C), formatted it so it
could go into doc. B, and copied content into doc. B.

After a day or two of other edits in doc. B, saving it, closing/reopening
it, it became "automagically" password protected. No confirmation messages
about it. The password just "slipped into" my doc. Very strange.

Yea thanks. I had the same problem with an imaginary password. At the Save As
button - I clicked the tools button at the bottom right corner and then
erased the 'magic' password. And it stopped asking me for password to
modify/change...

Hm. When I check the Tools>General Options dialog box, there is
neither a password included, and the Read-only box is not checked.

Thoughts?

I'm working on a novel, and it's really getting to be a pain to have
to re-name my file constantly.

Also, if I rename the file the original filename, it might let me save
it once or twice. Then, I get a message saying that [my username] have
the file open. I'm not on a networked computer...so I have no idea how
or where my computer thinks the file is already opened and in use with
another user (that is me).

My guess is that maybe your temp folder is full of abandoned temp files -
which is why Word thinks you have it open somewhere. Check your temp folder:
it should be empty when all applications are closed. So after a fresh
reboot, check in Users, UserName, AppData, Local, Temp.

Also check in Users, UserName, AppData, Roaming, Microsoft, Templates to
make sure that there are no abandoned temp files there too. Quite often
normal.dotx and/or mail, dotx will have abandoned its temp file there too.
