Word 2007 selecting more than one object

I have an autoshape and a clipart in a Word 2007 document. I'd like to group
them. I looked in help and followed the directions which say: Go to the Home
tab/Editing/Select/Select Object, then you can draw a box around the objects.
I did that and it only selects the autoshape, not the clipart. Then I tried
holding [ctrl] down to select them one at a time. That selects one or the
other, not both, as it would in previous versions. It is recommended to use
the drawing canvas, but I want to get around doing that.
Thank you for any help.
Pascale.

Hi Teacher,

Unlike Word 2003, Word 2007 uses parts of more than one graphics engine when it handles different types of graphics, shapes and
objects. Unfortunately, the 'selection' tool can only see one engines generated items at a time.

One workaround is to use Office Button=>Save As and choose a Word 97-2003 document type and to then be sure that the graphics items
have text wrapping set to other than 'inline with text' (for inline with text items you can use Word's Find & Replace) when you use
Home=>Editing=>Select objects
