Word 2007, Show breaks, hide XE

In Word 2003 I was able to display page/section breaks but hide XE codes
(which affect text layout). Now it appears both fall under Hidden Codes and
it's all or nothing.
Is there any way to hide the XE codes but see the breaks in Word 2007?

As in previous versions, you can select exactly which settings are toggled
with the Show/Hide ¶ button (Word toggles between display of *all*
nonprinting characters and those that are specifically selected). If "Hidden
text" is checked in Office Button | Word Options | Display, then it will not
be toggled. Clear the check box, click OK, and then try again.

You can prevent the Show/Hide button from _hiding_ each of the
categories, but because both breaks and index codings count as "hidden
text," you can't turn on/off one but not the other.

Note, however, that in Draft (formerly Normal) View, the breaks are
always visible, the index codings not.

Yes, I believe you're right. I was thinking about the fact that sometimes
when you make an index, Word checks the box for "Hidden text" so that the XE
codes are still shown even when you toggle off the display of nonprinting
characters. But since there are no check boxes for page and section breaks,
there's no way to display those without displaying everything.

Switching to Draft view would be a partial solution but not a very good one
if you're trying to check layout. OTOH, page breaks are certainly clear
enough in Print Layout view, and section breaks can be but often aren't.
