Word 2007 shuts down when Outlook 2007 is running

OS: Vista Home Premium
APP: Office Professional Suite 2007
When Outlook is already running, then when I try to start Word (either by
opening a new doc or by starting Word from the start list), Word stops
responding. The dialog box then offers one option, to close.
Word works fine if Outlook is not running.
IF I close Outlook, then wait until the HD light stops, Word works fine. I
can then open outlook without an error.
I have applied all available updates both to Office and to Vista.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Unlike previous versions of Office, Outlook 2007 does not use Word as the
email editor - though it may look like Word, it is actually its own editor
running from its own dll. What you are saying is rather like saying that
Excel crashes if Word is also running. This sounds like something else is
happening the system causing the problem with 2 applications running. Try
checking in Task Manager to see if it gives any clues to what may be hanging
Word. The Not Responding may be because something is taking 100% CPU or
hogging all the memory.
