Word 2007 slow start

Have Windows XP and a new fast computer. Office 97 is installed with Word
2003 upgrade . Word is very slow to start ( in comparison to Excel, which is
instant ) and before it actually starts it puts a dialog box on the screen,
which appears too quickly for me to read. I thought that perhaps there was
something wrong with the upgrade installation, but reinstalling did not
correct the problem. How can I correct this?

The message that appears is "Preparing to Install" Does this help isolate
the problem?

Do you have another version of Word installed on the same computer?

What is in the computer is: Word 97 and the upgrade to Word 2003. I had to
install or leave in Word 97 in order to be able to use the upgrade to Word
2003.

Actually, you just have to have proof that Word 97 is installed in order to
upgrade, and the usual process would be to install Word 2003 over Word 97
rather than side by side. Can you still use Word 97? If so, then the two
versions are fighting for dominance; whenever you start the one that wasn't
used last, it will try to rewrite the Registry to favor itself. There are
Registry keys that can be edited to prevent this for Word 2003 and Word
2007, so I suppose something similar might be applicable to Word 97 and
2003.

Thanks for your replies. My installation proceedure was to install Word 97
then the upgrade Word97. So, I do not believe I have a "side by side"
installation. I searched for Word 97 and could not find it on the hard drive.
I did find the following files which may be significant or have some meaning
to you. They were Microsoft Office - Word 2003; Word.Exe-062B1850.pf; Word
..Exe-365CA810.pf.
Does any of this present a conflict?
