Word 2007 Spell check not "checking"

B

Beccie

I have Office 2007 installed on my machine and the Spell Check seems to be
working well in Outlook and Excel, however, it does not check in Word even
though it gives me the Spelling and Grammar is Complete message. I have
checked the settings against the other PCs that have the same software and
cannot find any differences. Those PCs work fine with Spell check. All of
these PCs were new last summer and we bought the licenses for the software
and installed here not at manufacturer. I have tried to do an Add/change
for the dictionary in the control panel but that has not solved the issue. I
need to use English US dictionary. I have purposely misspelled words to
check this out and they have been skipped. I have copied my typing into
Outlook and proofed it from there which works fine. Any suggestions?

Try the following select the whole document (Ctrl+A), Language, Set Language,
clear the "Do not check spelling and grammar" box?
What you describe nearly always point to this box being ticked for the text
that is not being checked.

Could you be a bit more explicit on the instructions? I am not sure of the
path/steps at this point as I have went to the Commands and found Lauguage
but cannot access the Set language feature. I have also accessed the Word
Options Menus and feel I have spent an inordinate, excessive amount of time
already trying to resolve this issue.

I did find it under the Review Tab, Proofing, Set Language, however, the box
was not checked so we are back to square one!

Unfortunately (or fortunately) I am on 2003 so don't know exactly where this
options is.
On the bottom status bar do you see the Language button (saying
"English(UK)"?), double click this.
The online help says that the Set language option in 2007 is on the Review
tab, Proofing Group and then under the Thesaurus icon.
Hope this helps

You did have the entire document selected when you looked at the setting?

Yes, I did. This is what is so fustrating as I have looked into this very
subject on this discussion board to see if I could find a solution and
nothing seems to work.

1. Verify settings in Word 2007:
a. Open a document that has this problem, press Ctrl+A to select all of
the text.
b. Click on Review tab | Proofing: Set Language | <choose your language>
| uncheck the "Detect language automatically" and "Do not check spelling
or grammar" boxes | Default | OK.
c. Click on Office Button | Word Options | Proofing | check the "Check
spelling as you type" and "Check grammar with spelling" boxes | uncheck
the "Hide spelling errors in this document only" and "Hide grammar
errors in this document only" boxes | OK.

2. If the previous suggestion doesn't help, then in Word 2007 click on
Office Button | Word Options | Add-Ins | Manage: Disabled Items. If you
see any disabled items that relate to spelling, try enabling them.

3. If the previous two suggestions don't help, then:
a. Close Word and any other open applications.
b. Click on Start | Run | Open: regedit .
c. If the key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0\Override" exists, delete it.
d. Exit regedit.
e. Restart your computer.
