Word 2007 Spellcheck not working

I have just started using Word 2007 (was using office 2000) and my spellcheck
is only catching the grammatical mistakes but not the spelling errors.

I.E. only green curlys and no red ones.

I have already ensured that:
"Do not check spelling and grammar automatically"
"Detact language automatically"
"Hide spelling errors in this document only"
"Hide grammar error in this document only"

are ALL UNchecked.

"Check spelling as you type"
"Mark grammar errors as you type"
"Check grammar with spelling"

are all CHECKed

Please advice!!

Did you have all the text in the document selected when you checked for "Do
not check spelling and grammar"?

Yes.

When I tried it on an existing document I had,

If i selected ALL text (inclusive of "my auto table of content"), the "Do
not check spelling and grammar" box is checked with a square and even if I
unchecked it, the spell check still did not run. And when I opened the "Set
Language" option again, I would find it checked with a square again.

But if I only selected all the body text (with obvious spelling mistakes),
the "Do not check spelling and grammar" box is UNchecked.

I also tried it with a new document (with no other word documents open at
the same time, if that matters). The "Do not check spelling and grammar" box
was also unchecked but spellcheck could not pick out spelling mistakes too.

Do you need anymore information?

By "checked with a square," I assume you mean that it was shaded, which
means that the formatting in the document is varied. Are you saying that the
spell check doesn't work even in portions of text that are *not* formatted
as "Do not check..."? I have no idea what would cause that. As for the TOC,
it's possible that the TOC styles have been formatted as "Do not check..."
and are therefore resuming that formatting every time the TOC is updated.
But that's a shot in the dark. Your best bet might be to post your question
in the newsgroup devoted specifically to this topic; see
