Word 2007 starts and shuts down slowly

My Word 2007 starts and shuts down very slowly. It also gives a "not
responding" message during shut down, but eventually shuts down. Prior to
that, this problem was accompanied by a normal.dotm file problem, which I
have since sorted out using the answers I found here. I have no idea how I
had changed the template file, but that is certainly where the slowness and
"not responding" message started appearing.
