I've had Word 2007 for about a year on my Laptop. About a month ago, it
started throwing errors that state "Word has stopped working" when I tried to
close it. Office diagnostics reported there are no problems. (yeah right). I
read that HP printer drivers may cause this. I have an HP driver (and a wifi
printer), so I changed the default printer to Microsoft XPS Document Writer.
I still have the same problem.
I also read here that add-ins my be the culprit. I went to Word Options but
I could not select the Add-in category button in the left/hand column. In
fact, I cannot select any of the other category buttons. The "Popular"
button is highlighted and all of it's options are configurable. But I cannot
get to the others with either the touchpad, arrow keys or tab.
I read here to run it in Safe Mode. I've done that. I can open and close
Word propertly and I can get to the Add-ins.
I have a paypalWordAddin (not using), a Snagit addin (not needed as an addin
within Word but I've been using) and a Send to bluetooth addin (not sure why
that is there?) as active COM Addins. I selected Manage COM Add-ins.
However, I cannot disable them. The error message is, "The connected State
of Office add-ins registered in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE cannot be changed."
I couldn't find any more help on this so I did a quick web search. The
recommendation was to run Word as an admin to remove these. I opened
explorer and went to C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Microsoft Office\Office12
and right clicked on the file WinWord.exe. I selected Run As Administator
from the pop up menu. When User Account Control popped up to check with me if
I wanted to run Word, I held down the Ctrl key before clicking Continue. This
way it loaded word as an Administrator and is Safe Mode (after many
combinations, this is the only one that worked). I was then able to open
Addins, Manage Com Addin's and remove Paypal and Snagit and disabled
bluetooth.
I still get the same error message when closing Word 2007 before I went
through these steps.
